The elements interact and play. Powerful forces from the struggle to find balance in the pull of gravity. A humbling display to bring the human mind to conceive the fragility of this body and life.

These images are a collection that visually describe an area of scrubby bushland in the Australian Capital Territory. Black Mountain is situated in the centre of the nations capital city Canberra and yet is still a wild, natural ecosystem. I became interested in capturing the surfaces of the mountain rather that trying to get traditional landscape images. The textures and patterns that naturally occur and become evident under close inspection give an impression that a wide vista cannot. This place seems so old and unchanged with ancient stone formations. Weathered rock and decaying wood display the effects of the elements and the continual passing of time. There is new life too with fresh shrubs, grass and eucalyptus trees growing and regenerating from bush fire damage.

The Australian Capital Territory is surrounded by a range of ecosystems. The alpine regions, coastal bushland and grasslands are explored in these photographs. These areas experience great variation of climate throughout the year. Baked by the sun in summer and frozen in winter, the landscape can be both harsh and delicate.
